Pakistan opted to hit after Winning the draw against Australia in Dubai. Sarfraz Ahmed, the captain, felt that the playing field was better for hitting in the early stages of the game.

Pakistan gave an off-road debut to Bilal Asif, while Mohammad Hafeez returned to the side of the Test after a two-year absence. Wahab Riaz, missing from the tours of Ireland and England for Pakistan, also joined again.

Tim Paine, the captain of Australia, also felt that it was a launch of 'bat first'. They delivered baggy greens to Aaron Finch, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne. Australia will look to change a losing streak in Asia, where they have only won three and lost 19 tests in the last decade. The last time the teams met in the United Arab Emirates in 2014, Pakistan won 2-0.
