Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the 2018 Asian Cup after failing to recover from a fracture in his right middle finger. He suffered the injury during the recent national T20 tournament. Wicketkeeper hitter Niroshan Dickwella, who was among the five substitute players, has replaced Chandimal in the 16-member team.
This is another setback for Chandimal, who has been assigned by SLC as a limited key player before next year's World Cup. Previously, Chandimal had missed almost the entire series against South Africa at home because of a spirit of cricket violation.
Dickwella was one of the outstanding players during the tour of South Africa and his exclusion from the initial team was a surprise. The 25-year-old has been out of the T20I team in Sri Lanka since his tour of Bangladesh in February. He played in the national T20 tournament last month, but only managed 24 runs in four innings.
Sri Lanka will play against Bangladesh in the first match of the tournament on September 15, before facing Afghanistan on September 17.
