Australian pitcher Harbhajan Singh criticized the decision of the selection committee led by MSK Prasad to eliminate Karun Nair.
On Saturday, Nair was fired from India's test squad for the local series against the West Indies. He was excluded after passing the five tests in the England tour on the bench.
"This is a mystery that must be solved," said Harbhajan, who worked as a television commentator on the tour of England, to PTI. "How can a person sitting on the bench for three months become so bad that he is not good enough to remain on the team?" Trust me, I endeavor to understand the thinking of this selection committee and the parameters they are using to selecting national squads. "
Nair made his debut in the test in the 2016 series against England, in which he achieved an undefeated 303 in the third round in Chennai. Since then, he has played only three tests at home, against Australia, and none since March 2017. Nair has had a high score of 26 in four innings in the test cricket since his triple century.
After the Australia series, Nair was eliminated for the home and away series against Sri Lanka and for the Tests in South Africa. He was named for the only Test against Afghanistan, but he did not play XI. In July, he traveled with India A to England, where he made two fifty years in six first-class innings against England Lions and West Indies A, with a maximum score of 93.
To complicate the confusion over Nair's role in the squadron, was overlooked for the final Test against England this summer, even when reinforcements were required; India made a debut to the batter of Andhra Hanuma Vihari, who was not part of the original squad, in The Oval.
"I find different rules for different players, there are some who receive a long rope to be successful while for other selected players they do not even have the chance to fail," said Harbhajan. "What happens if Hanuma Vihari fails in two Test matches against the West Indies?" Although I would never want something like that for any player, I wish him [Vihari] all the best.
"But [if Vihari is not able to deliver] you will go back to Nair but will you? Will you be prepared for the battle with confidence for the tour of Australia [at the end of 2018]? "
Harbhajan also questioned whether the team management and the selection committee were in sync." If the team management did not play Karun in five tests, then it means that he could not inspire confidence in them.
"Well, my question is whether the coaches were able to convince the captain to name Karun for the England series, or they seriously considered the name the team management had in mind. They are concerned about the selection of teams undergo correction of the course before they decide on the tour [squad for the] of Australia. "
