Lancashire won the race to sign Northants Richard Gleeson.
Gleeson, one of the fastest bowlers in the county game, was of interest to several of the larger counties, but he has chosen to return to the county of his birth. .
Although he had no contract in Northants, he had a release clause in his contract that allowed him to join a Division One county if the compensation terms were met and it is understood that the club with liquidity problems had announced its availability .
Despite being 30 years old, Gleeson has only played 22 first class games and has been a late developer in the game. After impressing at Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland, Gleeson made his first class debut in 2015 and played for Northants match by match in 2016. He claimed his best first-class cricket and ticket numbers – 6 for 79 and 9 for 95 respectively – earlier this week.
Until winning his last chance, Gleeson worked as a community coach for the Lancashire Cricket Board. So rapid has been his progress, however, that he was called to the Lions team of England in the Caribbean earlier this year.
Injuries have interrupted his season at Northants but he is at the peak of his championship averages and Vitality Blast. 19659007]
