M Vijay joins Essex for end of Championship season

M Vijay, the India starter who was eliminated after two series tests against England, joined Essex for the rest of the 2018 county season.

Vijay, 34, bagged a pair in Lord's to follow scores of 20 and 6 in Edgbaston that led to his omission for the third test on the Trent Bridge. Then he was left out of the updated team in India for the last two games of the series.

"I was here with the Indian team about a month ago and I saw first-hand how good the crowd is, I can not wait to play with Essex and hopefully win some games," Vijay said.

Essex has three games left in the season of the County Championship and is still not entirely sure of his status in Division One after a heavy defeat by Surrey. The first three for that match were Nick Browne, Varun Chopra and Tom Westley, and it could be that one of them gives way to the arrival of Vijay.

Essex head coach Anthony McGrath said: "We are delighted that Vijay has chosen come here, he is a great hitter who can score runs at the top of the order.

" Vijay's ability to Scoring runs means that you can be the difference maker in a game, and that ability is something we were looking to bring in towards the end of the season and something that excites us.

"The campaign is coming to an end and we have some really great games for the next month, so attracting someone with the experience and international quality that Vijay has could make all the difference for us."
